You may not be aware of this, but chemical peels are one of the oldest skin treatments performed. The ancient Romans found that acidic liquids could effectively strip away dead and damaged cells on the surface of the facial skin, the result being a more radiant and youthful complexion. The recent resurgence in peel treatments is no surprise. Even with the advanced facial skin rejuvenation procedures now commonly performed, a chemical peel remains perhaps the most effective way of replacing age-damaged skin with healthier tissue.
We are specialists in chemical peel treatments and various other procedures, and after a single consultation, we can suggest the proper procedure for you. Many of our clients regularly schedule a peel treatment once or twice per year as a sort of skin maintenance regimen. Below, we offer some important information about this effective skin revitalizing procedure and outline some of the positive benefits.
Why Chemical Peels?
This type of skin treatment involves the lifting away of the epidermal layer of skin, and in some cases, removal of the upper portion of the dermis. The body responds to the skin ablation by accelerating the production of replacement tissue. When the dermal layers begin to mutate in structure and composition, they become laden with nutrients and proteins. This results in a new skin surface that is healthier than what it is replacing.
Many of the alternative treatments can help with skin texture and tone, but there’s a downside. The individual may experience uneven texture and even notice the beginnings of new areas of hyperpigmentation. On the other hand, a chemical peel stimulates healthy skin tissue production, and this means skin that is even in tone, has better overall texture, and contains an increased amount of collagen and elastin.
Your skin surface is actually the result of tissue that’s created further down. The uppermost part of the dermal layer slowly but steadily changes composition and moves upward to form the epidermis. You actually shed your epidermis over a period of time, although you don’t really notice this. What happens down below affects the appearance of the surface cells. This is the secret behind the effectiveness of a chemical peel.
Improving Skin Texture
Age-related problems such as fine wrinkles and brittle, dull skin appearance can be corrected via this treatment. The wrinkles are forming because the skin is no longer moisture-balanced and contains an inadequate amount of proteins, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Dull patches that appear brittle are the result of sun exposure. The damaged skin cells keep on reproducing without improvement.
A peel treatment stimulates rapid replacement of the epidermal layer. The new layer will be moisture-balanced, and it will be more supple and taut than what it replaced.
Better Skin Tone
As we age and mature, we notice that our facial skin becomes uneven in tone. Some areas appear more opaque than before, and certain regions become redder or whiter. Even those individuals with lots of melanin in their skin experience uneven tone.
After the new epidermal layer is formed as the result of a peel treatment, the skin shows fewer areas of noticeable tone differentiation. This means a more youthful appearance. In most cases, a single peel treatment, one that addresses epidermal skin tone problems only, is all that’s needed to bring about a more healthy-appearing skin surface.
Correcting Blemish Problems
There’s a long list of blemish problems that become more pronounced as we continue to age. These include age spots, liver spots, acne scars, injury scars, freckles, and discolorations along wrinkle lines.
These become more noticeable because they are superficial or at least near to the skin surface. Unless these tissues are ablated or the cells that make up these blemishes are replaced, the problem persists. Sun exposure is the most common reason for the increasing prominence of facial blemishes.
Chemical peels address these problems by prompting the body to create replacement tissues. Even deep scarring may become less noticeable because the surface skin layers are healthier.
Performing a Chemical Peel
An acid solution is used to ablate the uppermost layer of skin. Depending on the type of peel treatment being performed, we will choose a specific acid or a combination of two or more of them. There’s no special at-home care that needs to be performed prior to treatment unless the peel is a really deep one.
During the consultation, we will examine your face closely and note the actual skin tone and the depth and severity of any wrinkles and blemishes. We will then suggest the proper peel treatment. If a superficial peel is the suggested treatment, you can make an appointment for any time that is convenient for you. That’s because a superficial peel takes only about 45 minutes to perform, and there’s no recovery period associated with this simple procedure.
If we suggest a medium-depth peel, you’ll be doing a bit of follow-up care afterwards. A deep peel is not commonly performed, and we suggest this treatment only if the dermal layers themselves need to be slowly replaced. Severe sun exposure damage is the reason why we might suggest a deep peel treatment. In fact, we’ll only perform this type of procedure once. It’s not a good idea to repeat it, not even years afterward.
Superficial Peel Treatment
Also known as a lunchtime peel, this treatment addresses problems at the skin surface. We use a mild acid solution containing glycolic or a similar acid compound. After we wash the face, we apply the acid using a cloth or brush.
The acid sits on the surface for about eight minutes. We then use a special solvent to wash away the solution. At this time, the acid has already begun to affect the epidermal skin cells. They slowly dry up over the next two or three days.
Much like what happens when you get a mild sunburn, the epidermal layer begins to flake away. This signals that a replacement of surface tissue is in order. Your dermal layers will accumulate additional nutrients as the uppermost portion of the dermis begins to mutate and move upward. About two weeks after treatment, you now have a new epidermal layer, one that’s made up of healthy skin cells.
Small, non-set wrinkles are now gone or at least are greatly diminished. Surface scarring is also far less visible. The amount of hyaluronic acid, which is actually produced naturally in your body, also increases in the upper skin layers, and this results in firmer skin because of the additional moisture.
The results of a superficial chemical peel can last for up to nine months. This is by far the most commonly performed peel treatment, and it can do wonders for the appearance of your facial skin.
This treatment addresses such concerns as deeper wrinkling and blemishes that occur below the skin surface. We will likely choose a stronger acid or allow the acid to sit on the skin surface for a longer period of time. In years past, this peel treatment was not recommended for those individuals with darker skin because of the possibility of bleaching. Nowadays, however, we have a lot more choices when it comes to choosing the acid mix. We have a lot of experience in this area. Choosing low-dose mixes of several different acids is better than using a single, high-strength acid. We can perform a medium-depth peel on individuals with dark skin tone without fear of causing unwanted hyperpigmentation.
During a consultation, we will talk to you about this if we are suggesting a medium-depth peel. This way, you’ll know why we are applying a particular mix of acids.
This peel treatment is performed in the same manner as a superficial peel, but the acid sits on the surface for a longer period of time. Some of the uppermost dermal layer is affected along with the surface epidermis. After the acid is washed away, the skin is pink in tone. We’ll give you some special salves to use at home and outline the procedures you’ll take as you cleanse the skin daily. There’s no real downtime after a medium-depth peel, but you may have to keep out of the sun for a week or two following treatment.
This peel will really improve the appearance of subsurface scarring, deeper wrinkles, and regional areas of certain skin conditions such as rosacea and melasma. The results last for a year or more.
Deep Chemical Peel
We’re not going to go into much detail here about a deep peel treatment other than to say that it’s a more aggressive skin rejuvenation procedure. This treatment addresses problems associated with years of overexposure to the sun. It’s generally performed on individuals between the ages of 40 and 55.
A strong acid is applied to the facial skin and is allowed to set for up to 30 minutes. After this treatment is completed, skin drying and flaking is much more pronounced than what is experienced with a superficial or medium-depth peel. Recovery takes about two weeks, but the positive results are dramatic indeed. Deep skin tone problems are corrected, and brittleness is gone, replaced by a smooth skin surface. We’ll make the final recommendation on the strength of the peel, and chances are you won’t be a candidate for a deep peel because it probably won’t be necessary.
Benefits of Chemical Peels
Of course, the idea is to produce a skin surface that’s youthful in appearance, and the best way to do that is to improve the health of the skin layers. The body has a remarkable way of healing itself so long as it’s given the chance to do so. Purposeful injury that’s controlled is one of the most effective means of triggering a rejuvenation process. A chemical peel is indeed a form of controlled injury.
Because the new skin surface is healthy and contains no damaged or dead cells, your skin care products will actually work better. Most of our clients notice an improvement in the effectiveness of their moisturizers and nutrient products after having a peel treatment performed. This is because the at-home products being used no longer have to penetrate through dead and damaged cells. The skin is now breathing much more effectively as well.
The treatment can be further customized to address various concerns. For example, if brown spots are a problem, the acid mix can be modified to include a brightening dose of Vitamin C. If you have very sensitive skin, a soothing dose of polyphenols can be added to the recipe.
If you use undereye concealers, we have good news. We can mix the right combination of acids, one that includes — of all things — lactic acid, to get rid of hereditary dark circles caused by years of the piling up of pigment.
As you can see, the treatment has advanced significantly since the days of the ancient Romans. During a consultation, we will go into further discussion of these customized treatments. This way, you’ll know exactly why we might recommend one. Do keep in mind that our goal is not to make a 55-year-old look like a teenager again. Rather, we want to help you look five to ten years younger using our advanced services.
The Most Important Benefit
The word is collagen. Most people don’t think of a chemical peel as a means to increase the amount of collagen in the skin, but peel treatments do indeed give your skin a collagen boost. Collagen and elastin are the proteins that keep the skin taut and supple. As you probably know, wrinkling and sagging are mostly due to the decrease in the amount of these important proteins.
Because a peel treatment involves purposeful damage to the upper skin layers, the response by the body means additional protein delivery to the newly created tissues. This, more than anything else, is what diminishes the appearance of age-related wrinkling.
How Can We Help You?
You’re reading this because you are looking for a simple, effective way to turn back the aging clock. You might be wary of certain treatments because you’ve heard about dangerous side effects. You might be turned off by the idea of harsh procedures.
Peel treatments are simple to perform, and they are effective because the application of the acid mix is all that’s necessary in order for a triggering of natural body tissue replacement. Once the peel acid is washed away, you can forget about what happens next. On its own, the body begins to produce healthy skin growth while you go about your usual business.
